Surgical Management of Neurological Disorders

Neurosurgery

Matis Hospital provides evaluation and surgical treatment for conditions affecting the brain, spine, spinal cord and related nervous system structures. Neurosurgery involves the surgical management of neurological conditions when an operative or procedural approach is considered appropriate. The treatment plan depends on the underlying condition, its severity, the patient's symptoms, imaging and other investigation findings, and overall health. Depending on the diagnosis, patients may require surgical treatment, non-surgical management or coordination with other neurological specialties.

Conditions Managed by Neurosurgery

Neurosurgical care may include the evaluation and treatment of conditions such as:

  • Brain tumours: Surgical assessment and treatment of selected tumours affecting the brain or surrounding structures.
  • Spinal disorders: Surgical management of selected degenerative, traumatic or structural conditions affecting the spine and spinal cord.
  • Head injuries: Evaluation and surgical management of serious traumatic injuries involving the brain or skull when required.
  • Hydrocephalus: Conditions involving abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid that may require surgical treatment.
  • Vascular conditions: Selected abnormalities affecting blood vessels of the brain may require neurosurgical or endovascular management.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: Severe facial nerve pain that may require specialist evaluation and, in selected cases, procedural or surgical treatment.
  • Congenital neurological conditions: Certain developmental conditions affecting the brain or spine may require neurosurgical assessment.
  • Other neurological conditions: Selected conditions involving the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves may require specialist surgical evaluation.

The appropriate treatment is determined according to the diagnosis, clinical findings and individual patient requirements.

Neurosurgical Procedures and Care

Depending on the condition, neurosurgical treatment may involve conventional surgery or minimally invasive approaches when clinically appropriate. Procedures may include surgery for selected brain or spinal tumours, treatment of hydrocephalus, spinal procedures, trauma-related surgery and other specialised interventions.

Patients may undergo neurological examination, imaging such as CT or MRI, laboratory investigations or other diagnostic assessments before treatment. These investigations help the clinical team understand the condition and plan an appropriate approach.

Some neurological conditions require urgent assessment and treatment. Severe head injury, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking, loss of consciousness, seizures or other sudden neurological changes may require immediate medical attention. Emergency treatment is determined according to the patient’s clinical condition.
