Minimally Invasive Care for Joint Conditions

Arthroscopy

Matis Hospital provides arthroscopic evaluation and surgical treatment for selected conditions affecting the joints. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a small camera and specialised instruments to examine and, when appropriate, treat problems within a joint. The suitability of arthroscopy depends on the patient's condition, clinical examination, imaging findings and treatment plan recommended by the orthopaedic specialist.

What Is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. The word arthroscopy comes from two Greek words, “arthro” (joint) and “skopein” (to look).

Depending on the condition, the surgeon may use specialised instruments through additional small incisions to diagnose or treat problems involving structures such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons and the joint lining.

Arthroscopy may be considered for selected conditions affecting joints such as the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, elbow and wrist. The appropriate procedure depends on the patient’s symptoms, clinical examination and imaging findings.

What Are the Potential Benefits of Arthroscopy?

Depending on the procedure and the patient's individual condition, potential advantages of arthroscopy may include :

  • Small surgical incisions: Arthroscopic procedures generally use smaller incisions than conventional open surgical approaches.
  • Direct visualisation: The arthroscope provides a clear view of structures within the joint during the procedure.
  • Targeted treatment: Selected joint conditions can be examined and treated using specialised arthroscopic instruments.
  • Procedure-specific recovery: Recovery time varies depending on the joint involved, procedure performed and individual patient factors.
  • Planned rehabilitation: Physiotherapy and activity modification may be recommended as part of recovery when clinically appropriate.
