Diagnosis and Management of Kidney Disorders

Nephrology

Matis Hospital provides medical evaluation and treatment for conditions affecting the kidneys and their ability to maintain fluid, electrolyte and waste balance in the body. Nephrology focuses on the diagnosis and management of kidney disorders, including acute and chronic kidney disease, kidney-related complications and conditions that may affect kidney function. Diabetes and high blood pressure are important risk factors for chronic kidney disease, while other kidney disorders may result from infections, inherited conditions, immune-related diseases or other medical problems.

Kidney Diseases and Related Conditions

Nephrology involves the evaluation and management of a wide range of kidney-related conditions, including:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease: Progressive loss of kidney function that may require regular monitoring and long-term medical management.
  • Acute Kidney Injury: A sudden decrease in kidney function that may occur due to illness, dehydration, infection, certain medicines or other medical conditions.
  • Diabetic Kidney Disease: Kidney damage associated with diabetes that requires appropriate monitoring and management.
  • Hypertensive Kidney Disease: Kidney problems associated with high blood pressure.
  • Glomerular Diseases: Conditions affecting the kidney’s filtering units, which may cause protein or blood to appear in the urine.
  • Electrolyte Disorders: Abnormal levels of minerals such as sodium, potassium and calcium that may occur with kidney dysfunction.
  • Kidney-related complications: Problems such as fluid retention, anaemia and mineral or bone disorders may occur with advanced kidney disease.

The appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause, severity of kidney dysfunction and the patient’s overall medical condition.

Kidney Function Assessment and Treatment

Evaluation of kidney health may include blood and urine tests to assess kidney function and detect abnormalities. Tests such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin measurements can help evaluate and monitor kidney disease.

Treatment may include medicines, blood pressure and blood glucose management, dietary and lifestyle measures, treatment of underlying conditions and regular monitoring of kidney function. In advanced kidney failure, renal replacement therapy such as haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be considered when clinically appropriate.

Patients with progressive or advanced kidney disease may require ongoing nephrology follow-up to monitor kidney function, manage complications and plan appropriate treatment according to their individual needs.
