Surgical Care for Cancer

Cancer Surgery

Matis Hospital provides surgical evaluation and treatment for selected cancers where surgery may be an appropriate part of the patient's treatment plan. Cancer surgery involves removing cancerous tissue or tumors, along with surrounding tissue or nearby lymph nodes when clinically required. The type of surgery depends on the type, location and stage of cancer, as well as the patient's overall health and treatment needs. A surgical oncologist evaluates the condition and discusses the appropriate treatment options with the patient.

Understanding Cancer Surgery

Cancer surgery involves removing cancerous tissue or a tumour from the body. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, surgery may be used to remove a tumour, obtain tissue for diagnosis, assess nearby lymph nodes, or manage certain symptoms.

The surgical approach varies according to the affected organ, location and extent of the cancer. In some cases, surgery may be combined with treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy as part of an individualized treatment plan.

The recommended approach is determined after reviewing the patient’s diagnosis, investigations and overall clinical condition.

When Surgery May Help

Depending on the type and stage of cancer, surgery may be considered to :

  • Remove a tumour: Surgery may remove cancerous tissue along with a margin of surrounding tissue when clinically appropriate.
  • Examine nearby lymph nodes: Lymph nodes may be assessed or removed in selected cases to help determine the extent of the disease.
  • Support overall treatment: Surgery may form one part of a broader cancer treatment plan that may include other therapies.
  • Manage certain symptoms: Surgery may sometimes be used to relieve symptoms or complications caused by a tumour.
  • Treat specific cancers: The type of surgery is selected according to the cancer’s location, extent and individual patient needs.

Not every cancer requires surgery, and surgery may not be appropriate for every patient. Your surgical oncologist or treating specialist can explain whether surgery is suitable and discuss the available treatment options, risks and alternatives.
