Cardiology

Matis Hospital provides medical evaluation and treatment for conditions affecting the heart and cardiovascular system. Cardiology focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and management of heart conditions, including problems affecting the heart's rhythm, blood vessels, valves and ability to pump blood. The appropriate evaluation and treatment depends on the patient's symptoms, medical history, examination findings and diagnostic test results.

Understanding Heart Conditions

Cardiology covers a broad range of conditions that can affect the heart and blood vessels. These may include:

  • Coronary artery disease: Narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque buildup, which can reduce blood flow to the heart muscle.
  • Heart rhythm disorders: Abnormal heart rhythms, including conditions that may cause palpitations, dizziness or other symptoms.
  • Heart valve disorders: Conditions affecting the heart valves and their ability to open or close properly.
  • Heart failure: A condition in which the heart cannot pump blood adequately for the body’s needs.
  • High blood pressure: Persistent elevation of blood pressure, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications.
  • Other cardiovascular conditions: Conditions affecting the heart muscle, blood vessels or related structures may also require cardiology evaluation.

The symptoms and treatment needs can vary considerably between patients, so assessment by a cardiology specialist is important when heart-related symptoms are present.

Cardiac Diagnosis & Treatment

Cardiology evaluation may include a clinical examination and investigations such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography, blood tests, stress testing or other cardiac investigations when clinically appropriate.

For suspected coronary artery disease, coronary angiography can help identify whether the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked and can assist in planning treatment.

Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include medicines, lifestyle measures, regular monitoring or interventional procedures. Selected patients with significant coronary artery narrowing may be considered for procedures such as coronary angioplasty with stent placement or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The appropriate approach depends on the location and severity of the disease and the patient’s overall clinical condition.

Patients experiencing new or severe chest pain, significant breathing difficulty, fainting or other symptoms that may indicate an acute cardiac problem should seek urgent medical attention.
